The Republic of South Sudan is divided into 32 states. Until July 2011, the original ten southern states were administered by the autonomous Government of Southern Sudan as part of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed in 2005. Following the referendum held on 9 July 2011, these states were part of the Republic of Sudan. On October 13, 2015, South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit with approval of the Council of Ministers, decreed the creation of 28 states from the original ten states. On 17 January 2017, four additional states came into existance, bringing the number of states in South Sudan to the current thirty two states to appease the local citizens of each states who feel marginalize by the Juba based government. The states' creation has come without critisms.

The ten southern states were created out of the three historic provinces of Bahr el Ghazal, Equatoria and Upper Nile. They are further divided into 86 counties.
